Salmon Lake Overnight Trip

On September 7 and 8, 2000 the students, staff and a few parents took a special field trip to Salmon Lake. Salmon Lake is about 36 miles north of Nome on the Kougarok Road. On the way to the lake, students stopped off at the Nome River to check the temperature and pH of the water. They also used kick nets to collect aquatic organisms living in the river. The students found a wide variety of organisms. With the information gathered, we determined that the river was a good habitat for Salmon to spawn. The main focus of the trip was to study the life cycle of salmon. At Salmon Lake, students viewed red salmon that had spawned and were protecting their nests, or redds. They also participated in a game representing the salmon's life cycle, took a hike, collected lichens, and of course roasted marshmallows. After a busy day of science, the kids enjoyed a spahagetti dinner prepared by two of our volunteer fathers. We were glad to see that 22 of our parents also made it to the dinner It definitely was a fun way to begin the school year!

Nome Public School's School Board member Lew Tobin volunteered to be an overnight chaperone!
