Nome & its surroundings

Three main roads extend east, north, and west of Nome. Each of these roads offers its own unique sights. Heading northwest on the 72 mile long Nome-Teller road, you may see reindeer herds. The mountainous area is also home to musk oxen, bear, moose, and wolverines. The Kugarok road winds across rolling tundra for 82 miles. As you travel, you will past Salmon Lake and Pilgrim hot springs. If you head east towards the village of Council , you follow the coastline for the first 30 miles of the 72 mile trip. Along the way you will see the "Train to Nowhere". In Council , the tundra gives way to treelines.
